Impact Design Thinking
THE CHALLANGE OF ECO-EFFECTIVE INNOVATION
In our daily work we are often asked to recommend a way of combining innovation and sustainability. Although innovations are often driven by technology, this does not automatically mean that innovative solutions are also environmentally compliant. The needs to optimize and re-invent things in new ways are constantly accelerating. But to do things quickly, increases the risk of poor quality.
To avoid this, we have now combined the rapid innovation process Design Thinking with the eco-design inspired by the Cradle to Cradle principles. The result is a rapid and proven multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary iterative design process which includes the major environmental issues of: material health, material reutilisation, renewable energy, water stewardship and social fairness into the design - we named it Impact Design Thinking.
Design thinking embracing cradle to cradle®
Impact Design Thinking helps to understand and apply the Cradle to Cradle design concept through team work in small groups on a real-life challenge. Therefore the innovation process Design Thinking was optimized to make academic knowledge tangible, gain deep insights from EPEA’s Cradle to Cradle experts and co-develop user-centered ideas with positive impact for human and nature.
What’s in for your company or organization? The iterative method facilitates the development of rapid and holistic sustainable prototypes within days e.g. for architect contest, technical developments or team synchronization.
WHAT Is Design Thinking
Design Thinking is a design methodology and open mindset to deal with wicked problems. Orginally coined by the design agency IDEO in the early 1990s Design Thinking is nowaday „taught“ at the d.schools in Standford (since 2005) and Potsdam (since 2007).
Empathy and hands-on solutions orientation are key to the collaborative process.
